Finding a train operation which minimizes energy consumption for leading the train from one station to the next at the specified instant and stopping it there is dealt with in this paper. Since speed limit is observed strictly in the train operation, the problem should be considered as a bounded state variable problem. It is true that solving a bounded state variable problem is universally considered extremely troublesome, but the author has recently developed a very simple and clear method. The method is applied to this problem and the optimal control law has really been obtained straightforward and definitely. The author's is again confirmed to be very convenient to solve a bounded state variable problem. The research is believed to be the first scientific research on the economization of train operation.

Study on Voith-Schneider-Propeller is made much complicated by several factors even in two-dimensional treatment. When the chord length is small, however, the propeller may be regarded as composed of blades, each individually moving along a trochoidal path relative to uniform flow (quasi-steady state, interference disregarded), with suitable correction for advance speed. The author tried to make some account on the action of the propeller as two-dimensional under above principle, taking into consideration the curvature of blade path relative to the uniform flow, as well as the azimuthal location of the steering center and here are given some numerical examples. Also an application to cyclo-gyro aircraft is referred to. It is known that for air transportation purpose, the direction of blade rotation must be chosen in conformity with what sort of airfoil is used.

Computer control of an artificial hand which is incorporated with the tactile sense and force reflection is studied. In this experimental system, a digital computer is linked to the analog-type position-servomechanisms of the artificial hand using D/A and A/D converters, so that the position references can be changed repeatedly in the direction of decreasing the measured error signals. To deal with the versatility of the operation, the software system consists of a supervisory program and many basic program modules which correspond to respective basic manipulations. Furthermore, a symbolic command language which is adequate for such a purpose is prepared. It has been shown that the greatest difficulties in carrying out the complex and dexterous manipulations such as inserting a pin into a hole, turning a crank, etc., are solved by introducing the concept of bilateral servomechanism into the programming of the control computer.

This paper presents a new concept of a flexible and versatile shape reconfigurable control mechanism of a robot, called a versatile robotnoid (Vroid), which can be applied for plant maintenance work and other outdoor operational works, where the working environments are restricted due to mobile space and terrain. The Vroid I based on the multiple link-wheel mechanism has abilities of passing through rough terrains, passing over obstacles and going up and down stairways. Compare with the conventional wheel, crawler and legged locomotion types of the mobile mechanisms, the proposed Vroid I is considered superior with respect to flexibility and adaptability to working environments. Utilizing the redundance of joints in degrees of freedom, a method of the joint static control sequence is proposed to minimize the torques required to joint rotation under some constraints, which can easily be solved by the linear programming approach.

A superconductive magnet is generally thought unsuitable for a magnetic bearing because this magnet must be placed in liquid helium. The authors propose a new rotor-supporting system suing the strong magnetic field of a superconductive magnet. The experimental prototype was manufactured and its performances were evaluated experimentally and theoretically. The prototype consists of a cryostat, superconductive magnets, a rotor, mechanical auxiliary bearing, and so on. This newly devised cryostat can transmit an attractive force to a rotor which is placed in a normal temperature atmosphere. The bearing can suspend a rotor with hundreds of kilograms in the thrust direction using a mechanical auxiliary bearing in the radial direction. Besides, complete levitation is made possible when the currents of magnets are controlled automatically.

An algorithm for predicting heat release rate and pollutant emission in direct injection diesel engine has been developed according to the mathematical model mentioned in the first report. Predictions made with the simulation have been compared with the data on a single-cylinder engine over a range of engine speeds, injection timings and swirl ratios. Predicted pressure diagram, and NO and soot emissions showed acceptable quantitative agreement with the data. A parametric study of the effect of variations in load, speed, injection rate, injection timing, swirl ratio and droplet size is then carried out.

A theoretical method is presented for the bending problems of perforated plates within the framework of the Poisson-Kirchhoff theory of thin plates. The method is illustrated by giving the solution for an infinite plate with a doubly periodic set of circular holes having a square or triangular pattern under unequal uniform bending moments about the axes of symmetry. Numerical results are given for the distributions of the bending moments around the holes and stress concentration factors over the entire range of pitch to diameter ratios of general interest. The results show the power and flexibility of the technique. The solution obtained here can be used, just as it is, for a plate with holes of arbitrary shape and array. Also the extension of the method to a plate under a class of loads other than uniform bending, e.g. twisting moment or transverse shearing force acting on the edges of the plate is quite straightforward.
