We herein present the results of a survey which assessed the benthic fauna from subtidal to continental shelf depth in the Shirahama area from 2012 to 2016. Our research resulted in the identification of 132 species from 75 families in seven phyla, Cnidaria, Annelida, Tardigrada, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata and Chordata. This includes 24 newly recorded species to Shirahama. Two species were also new records for Japanese waters. Furthermore, six undescribed species and five potentially undescribed species were recorded. We provide a selection of relevant photos for future taxonomic studies and monitoring of environmental changes.

A new species of heteronemertean with branched proboscis, Gorgonorhynchus albocinctus sp. nov., is described based on the external feature and DNA sequences from a specimen collected subtidally among coral rubbles at a depth of about 6 m in a reef area around Taketomi Island in the Yaeyama Islands, southwestern Japan. It can be classified in the genus because the mode of proboscis branching is dichotomous, rather than alternating laterally. From the two known congeners G. repens Dakin and Fordham, 1931 and G. bermudensis Wheeler, 1940, the new species can be differentiated by having a brown body colour with a white band near the tip of the head. The new species is placed in a molecular phylogenetic context with a maximum-likelihood analysis using the nuclear 18S rRNA and 28S RNA genes, as well as the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, together with 20 species of heteronemerteans, for which those sequences were available in the public databases. The results indicate that G. albocinctus is closely related to Cerebratulus leucopsis (Coe, 1901), a species that is supposed to have a non-branched proboscis.

Four species of the genus Platorchestia Bousfield are described from Taiwan, e.g., P. pacifica n. sp., P. joi Stock and Biembaum, 1994, P. japonica (Tattersall, l922) and P. humicola (Martens, 1868). The former two species, together with P. platensis (Kmyer, 1845) and P. munmui Jo, 1988, compose a closely related species cluster. P. pacifica n. sp. was found on almost all the coast of the mainland and neighboring islands in Taiwan, while the other three species were found in the mainland north of 23.5°N.

Two species of the genus Melita, Melita setijlagella n. sp. and Melita shimizui (Ueno, 1940), are described from brackish waters in Japan. The former species is distinct in bearing the markedly setose flagellum of antenna 2. The latter has not so far been known from the Japanese waters, and shows variations in some characters, which distinguish the Japanese materials into three morphological "forms". Both species are also discernible from the other species of the genus Melita by the shape of male gnathopod 1 and female coxa 6.

The fishes of this family Callionymidae are classified into 19 genera. The twelve genera are redifined and the other seven genera are established as new. A key to the genera is given. The habitat and geographic distribution of each genus are shown. The external characters, especially cephalic lateral lines, lateral lines on the body, body size, body form, body color, eye diameter and secondary sexual charactors, are discussed in relation to the systematics of this family.

This is the first comprehensive list of sharks, batoids (rays and skates) chimaeras recorded from the waters of Russia and adjacent territories. This includes scientific names, common names (English, Russian in Latin transcription, Japanese and Czech), taxonomic comments, if necessary, distribution, synonymy and conservation status. From Russia the border areas, 40 species of sharks, 59 species of batoids and 7 species of chimeras that belong to the two classes (Elasmobranchii and Holocephali), 11 orders, 29 families, 5 subfamilies and 54 genera have been recorded over the last hundred years.

Hitherto twenty one species of gastropods parasitic on echinoderms have been recorded from Japan by various authors, such as RANDALL et HEATH (1912), S. HIRASE (1920, 1927, 1932), DALL (1925), Grsd;N (1927), Is. T AKI (1929), IWANOFF (1933), MORTENSEN (1940, 1943), KAWAHARA (1943), HABE (1944, 1950, 1951), KURODA (1949) and KURODA et HABE (1950). In this paper eight more species are added to this list. Of these six are new to science and also parasitic habits are confirmed in other two species which have never been noticed in this country. It is my pleasant duty to acknowledge here my deep indebtedness to Dr. Taku KOMAI and Dr. Tokubei KURODA for their kind direction and encouragement in the course of my study. On the afternoon of November 5, 1965 during strong north-northwest winds, Porpita, Velella, Physalia, G!aucus, Lepas, Fiona, and three species of Ianthina were blown onto the north beach of the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory. In the Laboratory with an ample supply of running sea water, many of these animals lived for several days and I was able to observe their feeding preferences and rates. On the basis of these obervations and the reports of other workers it is possible to construct a preliminary diagram of the neuston food web.

Four species of the genus Grandidierella were collected from estuaries and coastal area in Osaka Bay and the northern part of the Kii Channel, central Japan. Grandidierella fasciata sp. nov., G. osakaensis sp. nov. and G. japonica Stephensen, 1938 were from brackish area, G. insulae Myers, 1981 from sea area. These amphipods are described and validness of the three brackish species is examined by crossing experiments.

First zoea of a rare alpheid shrimp Vexillipar repandum Chace, associated with a deep-sea hexactinellid sponge, is described and illustrated based on laboratory-hatched material. The general morphology of the first zoea of V. repandum is similar to those of the previously-known examples of Alpheus. A diagrammatic key for identification of the family among caridean zoeas is proposed.

Shells of the intertidal gastropod Turbo coronatus coreensis at Tanabe Bay, central Japan, were fouled predominantly by the green alga Cladophora conchopheria, the latter being more abundant on these snails higher up the shoreline. The abundance of C. conchopheria on the shells of large snails (shell length> 10 mm) showed no significant seasonal changes, although the alga was recorded on small snails (shell length< 10 mm) from June to October and December but not in February or April. C. conchopheria was less abundant on T. coronatus coreensis shells inhabited by hermit crabs than on the shells of living snails. Increments of C. conchopheria coverage were not correlated with shell growth of individual snails. Under laboratory conditions, the coverage of C. conchopheria on snail shells decreased, and the rate of such not differing among early dead snails, later dead snails and shells inhabited by hermit crabs. The survival rates of T. coronatus coreensis in the laboratory was similar between snails fouled heavily or not at all by C. conchopheria.

Life cycle of Sarsia nipponica Uchida, 1927 was revealed through laboratory-culturing of specimens from the type locality, Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, .Japan. The morphology of its polyp, newly liberated medusa, and mature medusa was redescribed, stressing new character states observed in these developmental stages. The nematocyst complement and egg size of this species were described for the first time. The taxonomic evaluation of filiform tentacles, which were newly found in the present well-developed polyp, was particularly made.
