Saccoglossans collected in the central and southern Ryukyu Islands are described. Of 21 species recorded, II species are described as new: Volvatella angeliniana, Aplysiopsis wrangeliae, Costasiella paweli, C. usagi, C. vegae, C. rubrolineata, C. iridophora, C. kuroshimae, Elysiobranchus ryukyuensis, Elysia .flavipunctata, and E. minima.

Two species of the genus Melita, Melita setijlagella n. sp. and Melita shimizui (Ueno, 1940), are described from brackish waters in Japan. The former species is distinct in bearing the markedly setose flagellum of antenna 2. The latter has not so far been known from the Japanese waters, and shows variations in some characters, which distinguish the Japanese materials into three morphological "forms". Both species are also discernible from the other species of the genus Melita by the shape of male gnathopod 1 and female coxa 6.

The fishes of this family Callionymidae are classified into 19 genera. The twelve genera are redifined and the other seven genera are established as new. A key to the genera is given. The habitat and geographic distribution of each genus are shown. The external characters, especially cephalic lateral lines, lateral lines on the body, body size, body form, body color, eye diameter and secondary sexual charactors, are discussed in relation to the systematics of this family.

On the afternoon of November 5, 1965 during strong north-northwest winds, Porpita, Velella, Physalia, G!aucus, Lepas, Fiona, and three species of Ianthina were blown onto the north beach of the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory. In the Laboratory with an ample supply of running sea water, many of these animals lived for several days and I was able to observe their feeding preferences and rates. On the basis of these obervations and the reports of other workers it is possible to construct a preliminary diagram of the neuston food web.

Four species of the genus Grandidierella were collected from estuaries and coastal area in Osaka Bay and the northern part of the Kii Channel, central Japan. Grandidierella fasciata sp. nov., G. osakaensis sp. nov. and G. japonica Stephensen, 1938 were from brackish area, G. insulae Myers, 1981 from sea area. These amphipods are described and validness of the three brackish species is examined by crossing experiments.

First zoea of a rare alpheid shrimp Vexillipar repandum Chace, associated with a deep-sea hexactinellid sponge, is described and illustrated based on laboratory-hatched material. The general morphology of the first zoea of V. repandum is similar to those of the previously-known examples of Alpheus. A diagrammatic key for identification of the family among caridean zoeas is proposed.

Shells of the intertidal gastropod Turbo coronatus coreensis at Tanabe Bay, central Japan, were fouled predominantly by the green alga Cladophora conchopheria, the latter being more abundant on these snails higher up the shoreline. The abundance of C. conchopheria on the shells of large snails (shell length> 10 mm) showed no significant seasonal changes, although the alga was recorded on small snails (shell length< 10 mm) from June to October and December but not in February or April. C. conchopheria was less abundant on T. coronatus coreensis shells inhabited by hermit crabs than on the shells of living snails. Increments of C. conchopheria coverage were not correlated with shell growth of individual snails. Under laboratory conditions, the coverage of C. conchopheria on snail shells decreased, and the rate of such not differing among early dead snails, later dead snails and shells inhabited by hermit crabs. The survival rates of T. coronatus coreensis in the laboratory was similar between snails fouled heavily or not at all by C. conchopheria.

Life cycle of Sarsia nipponica Uchida, 1927 was revealed through laboratory-culturing of specimens from the type locality, Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, .Japan. The morphology of its polyp, newly liberated medusa, and mature medusa was redescribed, stressing new character states observed in these developmental stages. The nematocyst complement and egg size of this species were described for the first time. The taxonomic evaluation of filiform tentacles, which were newly found in the present well-developed polyp, was particularly made.
