The year of 1999 was not a very good year for gorillas in Japan. Two sad and strange stories about captive gorillas in a Tokyo zoo were reported in the mass media.I was involved in this problem as a primate(gorilla)researcher and came to the realization that, in Japan, zoo animals are regarded simply as breeding machines that are easily replaceable by buying other animals.I found it was really difficult to talk with zoo personnel on how to promote the welfare of zoo animals to assure'quality of life'and respect for 'the dignity'of animals. Why is the understanding of zoo animals by Japanese zoo professionals so different from that of Western countries?Surely this difference needs to be clarified before discussions to change this situation in the future can occur.Clearly, Japanese zoos have not kept up with the times, and is not only a problem for zoos but also for all Japanese because sympathy for captive animals as the weak is an indication of our attitude toward all living things inclusing humans.

D.H.Lawrence's The Rocking-Horse Winner(RHW) is a parapsychological story focusing on the relationship between a mother who has always had a grinding sense of a shortage of money, and her son who made 80,000 pounds by betting on horse races, but who, in the end, died insane. Young Paul becomes crazy about betting to stop repeated unspoken voices, saying "There must be more money", echoing in the house. This phrase may be regarded as an effective stylistic index 'repetition', because it describes the mother's inner desire for money. In this thesis, we discuss the unspoken phrases which are a clue to Paul's psychological state as a stylistic feature. As the first part of the story implies, the mother's grudge was caused by a loveless relationship with her husband that turned to an endless lust for money. We conclude that the striking stylistic feature of repetition represents an obsessional effect on Paul by his mother's inner vacancy to produce in him a kind of 'auditory hallucinations'. We also indicate that RHW is worthy of being called a modern parable since Lawrence generalizes the pathological nature of the mammonism of this modern world beyond 1926 when this story was written.

The present study examined the relationships between Type A/B behaviors and sleep habits, and morningness-eveningness types. Undergraduate students (35 males, 125 females) responded to three questionnaires : the KG's (Kwansei Gakuin University) Daily Life Questionnaire, the Japanese version of Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (ME) and the Sleep Habits Questionnaire. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between Type A score and sleep habits (sleep duration, wake-up time and bedtime), and that there was also no significant correlation between Type A score and ME score. However, two weak correlations were found between two subscales and sleep habits. HT (hard driving-time urgency) score was negatively correlated with the habitual sleep duration, and SP (speed-power) score was positively correlated with wake-up time. Thus it might be that substructures of Type A behavior are associated with sleep habits.
