1. The elderly in the later stage of living alone (the elderly, hereafter) have at least one person secured from among their relatives as a helper in case of an emergency. 2. The elderly value strongly their ie (family) tradition and wish to have their land, house and grave inherited by their eldest son. 3. The elderly strive to maintain a positive relationship with their daughter-in-law because she is likely to look after them in the latest stage of their lives. 4. The elderly regard themselves as outsiders to their children's families, because the children form their own family lives. 5. Although the elderly rely on their daughters for daily assistance and emotional interaction, the generations of neither the elderly nor their children tend to entrust the daughters with the family support entirely, because of their attachment to the ie tradition. 6. The elderly struggle to maintain their independence in the midst of the transition from the stem family system to the conjugal family system while being concerned about their diseases and loneliness.

パンプローナ市で毎年7月6日から7月14日まで実施されるサン・フェルミン祭は,守護聖人を敬う地域的な祝祭儀礼である。現代では世界的に有名になり,伝統的なものばかりでなく,現代的なプログラムも増えている。こうした中で祭りの本質と言えるものが,エンシエロ(牛追い),祝日の行列そしてヒガンテスとその仲間のパフォーマンスであり,そこにはこの都市固有の伝統的な文化が表されている。特に,サン・フェルミン祭では老若男女が皆,全身白い服装をして首に赤いスカーフを巻くという戦後から定着してきた仮装に特徴がある。本論は1999年に筆者がフィールドワークした成果を報告する中で,この固有の仮装と伝統的な祝祭儀礼という文化的なパフォーマンスについて記述し,そこで生成されるパフォーマンス空間の意味と機能について検討したもの。
