Effects of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) and gold nanoparticle (AuNP) on photon upconversion based on sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation were examined in the system of platinum(II) octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) and 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA). The ITO electrodes immobilized with AgNPs and AuNPs were prepared by electrophoretic method. Samples were prepared by sandwiching the solution of PtOEP and DPA between glass and the ITO electrode modified with AgNPs or AuNPs. In the sandwich samples, the enhancements of upconversion fluorescence from DPA were observed in the presence of AgNP, while the quenching of the upconversion fluorescence in the presence of AuNPs. The enhancements are most likely attributable to large electric fields due to localized surface plasmon resonance of AgNP. The quenching is most likely attributable to nonradiative metallic quenching of AuNP.

The purpose of this work is to study the electric properties of graphite and the synthesis of a few layers graphite intercalation compounds (GIC). First, intercalation of Li between graphite layers was done by soaking the substrates into a 20 ml n-butyllithium solution. Second, intercalation of FeCl3 into the graphite was done by heating FeCl3 powder and graphite in the quartz tube. For Li intercalation, the appearance of an extra Bragg reflection at 23.7º indicates that Li atoms were intercalated between the graphene sheets in the specimen we grew. For FeCl3 intercalation, the (00l) Bragg reflection was caused by the FeCl3-GIC. Probably Iron Chloride was intercalated in graphite. In the Raman spectra of graphite and FeCl3-GIC, the G, D and 2D peaks were confirmed. Additional peaks only in the specimen of FeCl3-GIC were observed at 1605 cm-1 and 3415 cm-1. It is speculated that the peak is related to the intercalation of FeCl3 into the graphite.

We carried out X-ray fluorescence holography at an undulator beamline of SPring-8 to investigate the local structure around the La atoms in Sr0.95La0.05TiO3 single crystal at 297 K. The weak La Lγ1 radiation was detected separately from the radiations Ti Kα1, Ti Kα2 and Ti Kβ1. The La Lγ holograms were collected in the inverse mode at seven incident X-ray energies from 7.00 keV to 10.00 keV. By the holograms the clear atomic images of Sr(La) and Ti are reconstructed around the La atom. On the other hand, no images of the O atoms were discriminated from the intensities of artifacts. The atomic image around the La atom demonstrates that the La atoms are substituted for the Sr atoms in the cubic perovskite structure of SrTiO3.

Methyl cellulose (MC) and Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) were considered to be environmentally and biologically friendly materials, and have been applied to industrial or biological use as a highly hydrophilic and viscous polymer. PEG-water systems in various molar ratios of ethylene oxide (constitutional repeating unit of PEG) to H2O were investigated by DSC, NIR (Near infrared spectroscopy) and 17O NMR, in order to investigate the behavior of water molecules in PEG hydrogel. The melting behavior of eutectic of PEG and water by DSC shows good agreement with those of NIR, NMR measurements. Alkali chloride aqueous solution forms a eutectic at low temperature. In this study, we focused on the MC -PEG- water system and MC-alkali chloride- water system at the water-rich region. The water state or the dynamic mechanical property was investigated. The PEG-MC-water system and MC-alkali chloride-water system form thermo reversible gel in the heating process. We found that the memory of the gel state was kept for 3 days after gelation at room temperature. The period of keeping the memory of the gel state after gelation agreed with the strength of PEG or Alkali chloride -water interaction. It was found that the interaction was detectable by DSC.
