In 2018, Takita et al. proposed a construction method of a fake QR code by adding stains to a target QR code, that probabilistically leads users to a malicious website. The construction abused the error-correction of error-correcting code used in the QR code, namely, the added stains induce decoding errors in black and white detection by a camera, so that the decoded URL leads to the malicious website. Also, the same authors proposed a detection method against such fake QR codes by comparing decoded URLs among multiple QR code readings since the decoded URLs may differ because of its probabilistic property. However, the detection method cannot work well over a few readings. Moreover, the proposed detection method does not consider the environmental or accidental changes such as sudden sunshine or reflection, nor recognizes the fake QR code as non-fake when the probability is low. This paper proposes new detection methods for such fake QR codes by analyzing information obtained from the error-correcting process. This paper also reports results from implementing the new detection methods on an Android smartphone. Results show that a combination of these detection methods works very well compared to when using only a single detection method.

To sustain and expand the agricultural economy even as its workforce shrinks, the efficiency of farm operations must be improved. One key to efficiency improvement is completely unmanned driving of farm machines, which requires stable monitoring and control of machines from remote sites, a safety system to ensure safe autonomous driving even without manual operations, and precise positioning in not only small farm fields but also wider areas. As possible solutions for those issues, we have developed technologies of wireless network quality prediction, an end-to-end overlay network, machine vision for safety and positioning, network cooperated vehicle control and autonomous tractor control and conducted experiments in actual field environments. Experimental results show that: 1) remote monitoring and control can be seamlessly continued even when connection between the tractor and the remote site needs to be switched across different wireless networks during autonomous driving; 2) the safety of the autonomous driving can automatically be ensured by detecting both the existence of people in front of the unmanned tractor and disturbance of network quality affecting remote monitoring operation; and 3) the unmanned tractor can continue precise autonomous driving even when precise positioning by satellite systems cannot be performed.

Fetal liver (FL) hematopoiesis is thought to be important for expanding the cell number during ontogeny. In order to investigate the cellular interaction molecules among FL stromal and hematopoietic cells, we established a monoclonal antibody, Ndk-10, that reacts with FL stromal cells but not with dish non-adherent cells. When Ndk-10 was added to an FL stromal and hematopoietic cell-coculture, it inhibited the survival of c-kit+ cells. The inhibitory activity of Ndk-10 was also observed in the fetal liver organ culture. The Ndk-10 recognized a 150 kD molecule in the adherent cells of FL and kidney, and the N-terminal amino acid sequence was identical to that of mouse aminopeptidase N/CD13. The peptidase activity of CD13 was inhibited by Ndk-10, and addition of its specific inhibitor resulted in the same inhibitory activity as Ndk-10. We propose that aminopeptidase N/CD13 is a critical molecule that regulates the survival of c-kit+ cells in the FL microenvironment.

Seafloor resource development in the future is expected to be accompanied by the mining of metal ores, as these sulfide ores contain valuable metals. However, the mining process is detrimental to marine oceanic environments. As a precautionary approach, innovations in the collection of environmental baseline data and new onboard assessment methods for marine environmental impacts are required. Due to the low cell density in open ocean water, techniques for rapid impact assessment of seawater without sample concentration are required. The purpose of this study was to establish a heavy metal impact assessment system for seawater samples of marine microbes using a portable flow cytometer, On-chip Sort. We established a protocol for detecting heavy metal-induced damage to cells via propidium iodide (PI) staining using algal culture strains (Bathycoccus prasinos NIES-2670, Synechococcus sp. NIES-969, Prochlorococcus sp. NIES-2885, and Cyanobium sp. NIES-981) obtained from the marine environment maintained at the Microbial Culture Collection of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba, Japan. Results showed that PI staining could detect the effects of heavy metals on cells. The proportion of PI-positive cells increased with an increase in the concentration of heavy metal mixture or copper exposure. Compared to cyanobacteria, damaged cells of eukaryotic algae were detected. Therefore, the effects of heavy metals on both eukaryotic and prokaryotic algae can be rapidly assessed via PI-based flow cytometry using samples containing low cell densities.

The purpose of this work is to study the electric properties of graphite and the synthesis of a few layers graphite intercalation compounds (GIC). First, intercalation of Li between graphite layers was done by soaking the substrates into a 20 ml n-butyllithium solution. Second, intercalation of FeCl3 into the graphite was done by heating FeCl3 powder and graphite in the quartz tube. For Li intercalation, the appearance of an extra Bragg reflection at 23.7º indicates that Li atoms were intercalated between the graphene sheets in the specimen we grew. For FeCl3 intercalation, the (00l) Bragg reflection was caused by the FeCl3-GIC. Probably Iron Chloride was intercalated in graphite. In the Raman spectra of graphite and FeCl3-GIC, the G, D and 2D peaks were confirmed. Additional peaks only in the specimen of FeCl3-GIC were observed at 1605 cm-1 and 3415 cm-1. It is speculated that the peak is related to the intercalation of FeCl3 into the graphite.

Selenium concentrations in whole blood of Japanese and American women with and without breast cancer and benign fibrocystic breast disease were determined. The observed blood Se levels of healthy Japanese women (0.286±0.021μg/ml) were similar to previously reported values for healthy Japanese adults. The Japanese patients with benign breast disease and with breast cancer exhibited blood selenium concentrations of 0.200±0.045 and 0.195±0.057μg/ml, respectively. The mean blood Se concentration of Japanese breast cancer patients with recurrence was 0.188±0.061μg/ml. The mean blood Se concentrations of healthy American women from San Diego, Calif., were 0.191±0.023μg/ml; of women with benign fibrocystic disease, 0.142±0.010μg/ml; and of breast cancer patients, 0.167±0.032μg/ml. The higher blood Se concentrations of Japanese healthy subjects as compared to healthy Americans can be attributed to differences in the dietary Se intakes; low blood Se concentration may be indicative of increased breast cancer risk.

In this paper, we have proposed a new method of observing walking traces, which can observe people's indoor movement for life-logging. Particularly emphasized new techniques in this paper are methods to detect locations, where walking directions are changed, by analyzing azimuth orientations measured by an orientation sensor of an Android mobile device, and to decide walking traces by a map matching with a vector map. The experimental evaluation has shown that the proposed method can determine the correct paths of walking traces.
