When a down looking radar observes rain from space, the cross sectional shape of each raindrop becomes very close to that of a disk, which fact implies that the hack scatter properties of raindrops may he approximated by those of spherical raindrops. To assess the accuracy of the assumption of spherical raindrops, this paper compares the hack scatter properties of deformed raindrops with those of spherical raindrops : the computation is made at 13.8 GHz, which frequency is used by the TRMM space-borne rain radar. This paper also derives expressions which approximate the backscatter cross section of deformed raindrops. The approximate expressions may be useful for examining the dependence of back scatter cross section on canting angles of raindrops.
