Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) was first isolated from a cluster of cats with suspected immunodeficiency syndrome. The genetic studies have confirmed that FIV is an innate virus with some homology to human and simian immunodeficiency viruses. Furthermore, FIV fails to grow in other mammalian cell cultures including human, but grows in feline peripheral blood mononuclear cells, kidney cells and interleukin 2 dependent T-cell lines. Infection of cats with FIV results in five distinctive clinical stages similar to those observed in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Following acute phase and asymptomatic carrier phase, a number of chronic diseases occur in infected animals, and the clinical manifestations are closely associated with development of immunodeificiency as measured by lymphocyte subset studies or by blastogenesis assay. The advantage of this feline system as an animal model for human AIDS includes ease of experimental infection using specific pathogen free cats with a relatively smaller cost and space, safety to other species including human, and similar clinical manifestations as well as the virologic relations. The safety is a major consideration in carrying out large scaled screening studies. Thus, basic pathogenesis studies and drug therapy screening will be the major fields that this system potentially can contribute to the human medicine.

Interaction between 4-META/MMA-TBB resin and dental pulp was investigated in vivo and in vitro. ① A cavity was prepared and the pulp was exposed in the occlusal surface of the tooth and filled with 4-META/MMA-TBB resin. Newly formed dentin was recognized just below the agent. During the healing stage, no inflammatory cell was observed but macrophages were detected close to the newly formed dentin, where tunnnel defects were appeared. ② 4-META/MMA-TBB resin was applied on the surface of pulp and 0.5% agar in vitro to investigate the surface structure on the resin after polymerization. When polymerization occured on the pulp, the surface of the resin revealed rods in shape. On the other hand, abundant cavities were found at the resin surface on the 0.5% agar. Taken all together, the surface structure of polymerized 4-META/MMA-TBB may cause macrophage migration around the interface between pulp and resin.

It is an undoubted fact that an occasional breakage of root canal instruments during clinical practice has bothered and frustrated endodontists for a long time. Such an accident has occurred even in the most experienced operator.   Various methods and instruments have been discussed and suggested for the settlement of this problem. However, in spite of such development, the intracanal breakage still remains an unsolved problem, which seems to have been more complicated.   This paper describes a method which I have recommended, together with other approaches which have been suggested.
