Aiming to contribute to the debate whether the Internet and in particular social networks are leading to echo chambers of fragmented groups or to public sphere, this article investigates the dynamics of echo chambers of followers of Turkish political youth groups on Twitter. It focuses on two classes: Official youth organizations of ruling party and main opposition party, and one independent group. Retrieving over 40 million tweets of 30 thousand followers of these groups, 5.5 million interactions between 2016 and 2018 were analyzed. Strong echo chambers are found, and no weakening observed with a small-scale exception through cross-ideology exposure by individuals following two groups. The results are discussed along with the political lines and the independence level of the groups.

In this paper we present the problems in developing the learning environment of Japanese as a foreign language in a small European country with its own language, and suggest a method of improvement. The Republic of Slovenia, an EU member state with a population of approximately 2 million, geographically and culturally distant from Japan, is taken as an example. Not only is the number of Japanologists in Slovenia quite small, the small number of potential purchasers results in higher prices for books, leading to difficulties in publishing Japanese language related materials. In this paper, construction of a learning support environment based on an information system incorporating Web 2.0 elements is proposed as the means of improvement: centralizing the existing resources on a single, academically credible website based on the Slovene language and focused on Japanese language learning, and inviting participation from not only Slovene students and scholars, but also Japanese students willing to support foreign students in learning the Japanese language.

The COVID-19 Pandemic is a global problem, and to prevent the spread of the infections, it is crucial not only to develop vaccines and therapeutic medications but also to encourage people to change their behavior. Behavioral change to prevent the spread of infectious diseases has required people to give up many activities, especially pleasures outside the home. However, it is hoped that if most people behave cooperatively, individuals’ selfish pursuit of pleasure will have little effect on the spread of infection. This conflict between benefits for individuals and those for the community as a whole can be considered a social dilemma. Clarifying the factors that define people’s behavior during epidemics is essential for designing social systems after the COVID-19 Pandemic is declared over. Here, we analyze the determinants of people’s behavior in the framework of a social dilemma by conducting a two-wave panel survey in 2020 and 2021. The results show that in the first wave, psychological attitudes that affect prosocial behavior, such as reciprocity, positively affect prosocial behavior. However, in the second wave, these effects disappear, and other factors define people’s behavior. Continuous analysis of the factors determining people’s behavior under drastically changing circumstances can provide information for planning measures to promote desirable behavioral changes.

The ranking of search engine results is commonly encountered media in daily life. However, most users are unaware of how search engines rank websites or even that the results are ranked, and trust that search engines arrange results appropriately. The purpose of this study is to clarify the history of the discourse on media (i.e., search engines) used to find webpages in Japan by analyzing articles in major Japanese personal computer magazines published during the Web 1.0 era. Consequently, this study clarifies that (1) the World Wide Web was originally considered as a “plaything” before becoming a tool for content searching, (2) tools for searching websites altered from semantic directories to computational rankings, and (3) discourse explaining computational technology gradually decreased resulting from a change in the search engine environment from over-competition to monopolization. Through this historical process, search engine rankings have become the major media for finding websites. This suggests that search engine rankings as media have become black-boxed, and implicit trust in the rankings was constructed. This study contributes to understanding how digital platforms affect daily communications by applying a media studies perspective.

The "Keep It Simple, Stupid" (KISS) principle stated by Robert Axelrod is a good guideline to model agent-based social simulation. However, to cope with real phenomena, we must go beyond the KISS principle. This paper re-examines the principle and discusses the underlining requirements for agent-based modeling using our recently developed agent-based models as examples.
