Author's special experiences of 40 years Magnetics research and development for amorphous alloy based Sensor Magnetics through two national universities and a national institute of technology are summarized. A topic of recent commercialized intelligent sensor chip installed in a mobile phone (Vodafone Ltd.) is timely introduced in which five amorphous wire-CMOSIC MI sensors are integrated detecting the geomagnetic field in the three dimensional MI sensor and simultaneously the angle and acceleration of the phone body in another two dimensional MI sensor combining with micro magnets. Importance of international and industry-university-governmental collaborations for promotion of basic researches to industrialization and research-oriented enterprising are presented.

The potential advantages of magnetically induced super-resolution (MSR) for high-density recording in magneto-optical disks have spurred the study of various related technology. MSR systems can read signals from a smaller area than the laser spot area by using magnetic films with different temperature characteristics. Most MSR systems require an external magnetic field in the readout. We have developed a new type of MSR (S-RAD) that does not require an external magnetic field. The front masking area of the S-RAD is formed by shrinking the recording mark in the readout layer. This paper describes the readout principle and readout characteristics of S-RAD. A C/N of 49 dB was obtained at the 0.5μm recording mark. A crosstalk level of less than -40 dB was obtained at a track pitch of 0.8 μm.We believe that S-RAD has sufficient potential to allow practical use of high-density magneto-optical recording.

OLYMPUS OPTICAL Co. Ltd., SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., and Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. in July 1999 announced the joint development of a 50 mm-diameter magneto-optical disk system, a new iD (intelligent or image) PHOTO format standard, together with an associated logo for this system standard, as a next generation medium for digital still cameras. The system is based on the AS-MO standard, and is a very suitable application format for digital still cameras. Despite the world's smallest rewritable optical disk of a 50 mm diameter, it has a high capacity of 730 MB, which exceeds that of a CD. It's data can be rewritten over 1 million times at a speed of more than 20 Mbps, and stored for long periods.
