A method has been developed for the recovery and recycling of selenium (Se) from Se-containing wastewater using the Se reducing bacterium, Pseudomonas stutzeri NT-I. The treatment of Se-containing wastewater with strain NT-I produced the bioselenium, which was composed mainly of organic matter and 11–14 mass% of Se. Specifically, the recovery of Se from the bioselenium by oxidizing roasting followed by wet reduction was studied. After thermodynamic calculations were performed to estimate the oxidizing behavior during roasting, experiments were conducted on the bioselenium for various roasting conditions. Selenium in the bioselenium was recovered in the form of solid SeO2 with a purity of 99% (metal basis) and a maximum yield of 97 mass% after roasting at 700℃. Wet reduction of SeO2 to metallic Se was achieved with a purity of 99% (metal basis).

We analyzed the spatial distribution of Ca dopants in α-SiAlON by using a statistical approach that analyzed a high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) image. By evaluating the image intensity of each atomic column, we found that the intensity deviation of columns with Ca atoms was twice that of other atomic columns. The results of HAADF-STEM image simulation suggested that there was a long-range repulsive interaction along the [0001] direction between pairs of Ca atoms in the same Ca column. Moreover, correlation of image intensities in neighboring Ca columns suggested the existence of a short-range repulsive force between first-nearest-neighbor Ca atoms. The origin of such anisotropic interactions between pairs of Ca atoms will be discussed.

In this study Cu-contaminated soils were chosen as a candidate material for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from hot coal gas. Experimental results showed that the H2S was significantly reduced below 10 ppm when the Cu-contaminated soils were reacted with H2S. The optimal removal temperature of H2S was found to be at 923 K in the operating conditions. In addition to Cu species, free Fe oxides in the contaminated soils also performed an active species to react with H2S and enhanced the overall sulfur capacity. Through the XPS analysis, Fe sulfide (FeS) and Cu sulfide (Cu2S) were the major products after removal experiments. Regeneration experimental results also indicated that the Cu-contaminated soils can be regenerated by pass air and thus be reused for many times.

Silver-containing 2205 duplex stainless steel was developed to study its phase transformation, precipitating behavior, as well as corrosion resistance. The result reveals that the doping of silver in 2205 duplex stainless steel decreased the γ2 phase volume fraction. In addition, the solubility of silver in iron was extremely low, and silver particles were distributed randomly both in the matrix and on the boundaries of the material. Silver particles were observed on the material surface and the number of particles on the surface increased with the silver content.The pitting corrosion resistance of the test materials decreased with increasing silver content. The pits on the material surface became more abundant when the silver content was increased. The protective function of continuous Cr2O3 film on the surface of the steel was destroyed by the silver particles that weakened the pitting resistance. In addition, the initiation of pitting corrosion usually occurred around the γ2 phase, which had low concentrations of chromium and molybdenum.

Fatigue crack closure in commercially pure titanium sheets severely deformed using the accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) process were investigated. Sheet processed through 6 cycles of ARB consists of fine equiaxed grains and elongated lamellar grains and shows a high 0.2% proof stress of 790 MPa. Fatigue crack closure was not observed in the ARB processed sheet. The effective threshold stress intensity factor ranges, ΔKth.eff, of the ARB processed sheets and starting sheet are nearly the same. On the other hand, the resistance of the fatigue crack growth rate of the ARB processed sheet is higher than that of the starting sheet. It was found that ARB increases the resistance for the fatigue crack propagation but has no effect on the onset of propagation.
