本稿は,リチャード・マルカスタ一の教育論の考察を通して,イングランドの後期ヒューマニストの教育論の特微とその背景,およびその教育史的意義を明らかにすることを課題としたものである。 マルカスターの教育論の主たる特徴は,前期ヒューマニストが古典語を重視したのに対し,彼らは母国語(英語)教育を重視したことである。その理由・背景は,宗教改革による福音主義の浸透に加え,ナショナリズム,英語の普及・標準化,国語意識の目覚めなどがある。 また, もう一つの特徴は,身体の訓練の必要性・重要性を唱えたことである。この主張の理由.背景は,彼が,身体を「肉(fresh)」と捉える観念的・教条的な見方から脱却し,身体と精神の関係を善悪や喜怒哀楽の「協同者(copartner)」とみたからである。 マルカスターの教育論は,前期ヒューマニストの教育論の古典主義を超えて,ラトケやコメニウスの母国語重視の教育や国民教育の構想,さらにロックの健全な身体と健全な精神を結びつけた教育論につながる位置にある。 Summary : This paper's aim is to study on Richard Mulcaster's thought conceming education. He was one of the humanists at the later English Renaissance. He was the headmaster of Meacant Taylors' School from 1561 to 1581, and St Paul's School from l596 to 1608. One of his main opinions is to make much of teaching English. The causes of the opinion are the spread of evangelicalism as the result of the Reformation, nationalism, popularizatin and standardization of English, and becoming conscious of mother tongue. Another proposition is to encourage training body. The reason is that he thought the soul and the body being copartners in good and ill, in sweet and sour, in mirth and mourning, and having generally a common sympathy and a mutual feeling in all passions. Mulcaster's thought concerning mother tongue was taken over by Wolfgang Ratke (1592-1635) and Jan Amos Comenius (1592-1670). And another propositin of training body was taken over by John Locke ( 1632-1704).
