As a result of rapid progress in computer graphics and CAD techniques. the clinical use of 3-dimensional images as an aid for various medcal procedures is becoming increasingly common. One such application is the surgical simulation system, which assists surgeons in planning surgical procedures by allowing them to be performed first on the computer screen. Great progress in medical electronics and computer technologies has made useful surgical simulation syttems possible. However there are some problems which prevent routine use of the system. This paper describes research towards soluins these problems, which involves understanding the technical status of recent surgical simulation systems.
