This brief paper attempts a lexical analysis of the Japanese proprietary term Tamagotchi as a new item of English vocabulary, based on the evidence of citations collected from printed and broadcast sources. The analysis is divided into the following main sections : spelling; pronunciation; grammatical function and form; etymology; definition; and derivative coinages. Thus it takes the form, albeit considerably expanded, of a prototype dictionary entry. There follows a small corpus of just over thirty citations from a wide variety of sources, arranged in chronological order. Finally, a few concluding remarks are presented.
