The frequency and duration of tobacco-related scenes, including cigarette smoking, side stream smoke, tobacco packs, purchasing, and an ashtray with many cigarette ends, an ashtray without cigarettes etc., were measured in Japanese television dramas, a film and a talk show. A very high frequency or tobacco-related scenes was observed on television screens when the main actor was a smoker. To prevent young people from smoking, we need to make tobacco-free television dramas, films and talk shows. Reducing tobacco-related scenes would help change the Japanese social norm of being highly tolerant of smoking.
