This paper shows a potential use of rock/pop songs in a lecture on American culture and society. Selected songs here are considered appropriate teaching materials when we talk about alienation/isolatedness that non-Americans (and immigrants) feel, serious problems and harsh realities in America, and more positively, American dreams and hopes, all of which are important aspects of American society and culture.
