本研究の目的は,ローマ字の抹消検査を通じて,(1)5歳から15歳までの文字認知の発達過程を明らかにし,(2)文字認知における男女差を明らかにし,(3)横組と縦組のいずれが認知されやすいかを吟味し,(4)文字認知における誤りの分析を通じて,鏡映文字への誤りを発達的に検討することにある。実験材料,てすと1-b文字抹消,てすと2-d文字抹消,てすと3-p文字抹消,てすと4-q文字抹消で,これらはすべて横組に文字を配列し,てすと5からてすと8まではこれらを縦組にして文字を配列してある。被験者,5歳から15歳まで,各年齢60名(男子30名,女子30名)である。主要な結果は次のようである。(1)発達過程,認知得点では,5歳から15歳にかけて進歩が認められる。誤謬率では5歳から8歳にかけて著しい減少が認められる。(2)男女差,認知得点と誤謬率からしても,男子よりも女子の方が優れている。(3)横組と縦組,認知得点と誤謬率からしても,b,d,qの各文字抹消では,横組の方が,p文字抹消では縦組の方が優れている。(4)b-d,p-qといった鏡映文字への誤りは,5歳児に多く,その後9歳児まで規則的な減少を示す。Using a cancelling test of Roman letters, the present study aims at (1) identifying the develop mental process of letter recognition in children from 5 years of age to 15 years, (2) identifying sex-differences in letter-recognition, (3) examining which arrangement (horizontal or vertical) of letters is easier for children to recognize, and (4) developmentally examining errors in cancelling with mirror-drawing letters. Experimental materials: Test 1-"b" letter cancelling, Test 2-"d" letter cancelling, Test 3-"P" letter cancelling, and Test 4-"q" letter cancelling. All of these tests consist of the horizontal arrangement of letters, and the vertical arrangement is adopted from Test 5 to Test 8. Subjects: Sixty children (30 males and 30 females) from 5 years of age to 15 years are distributed to each age group. Main results are as follows: (1) Developmental process: In recognition scores, progress is observed according to the age of the subjects ranging from the 5-year old to the 15-year old. Error rate decreases in accordance with the age from 5 years to 8 years. (2) Sex difference: Female subjects are superior to male subjects both in recognition scores and in error rate. (3) Vertical and horizontal arrangements: The horizontal arrangement produces higher recognition scores and less error rate than the vertical arrangement in the case of cancelling "b", "d" and "q", and vice versa in the case of cancelling "p". (4) Errors with mirror-drawing letters are most outstanding at the age of 5 years, and regularly decrease up to the age of 9 years.
