This paper deals with analytical and experimental study on hydraulically-operated valve gears in the Diesel engine. The authors worked out a system to drive valve gears hydraulically instead of mechanically. The calculation of the valve lift was made through the Characteristic Method, and the results were compared with the results of experimental investigation. Both results approximately coincided with each other. They indicated that hydraulically-operated valve gears were applicable to the Diesel engine. Hydraulically-operated valve gears were improved and tested in a practical Diesel engine. As a results, the engine performance became more efficient by use of hydraulically-operated valve gears.
