本稿は学習院大学に埋もれていた華族会館旧蔵洋書についての調査報告である。 明治2 年の布達により新たに華族と称されるようになった旧諸侯(大名)と公卿(公家)たちによって明治7 年に設立された華族会館は、明治10 年に学習院を創立した際、図書館を作る目的で収集していた資料のほとんど即ち和漢書9,159 冊及び洋書1,614 冊を学習院へ寄贈した。 その事実を裏付ける『華族会館寄贈図書目録』が学習院大学図書館書庫に眠っていた。 そのなかの洋書目録は日本語で記載されているため、表示された書名等を手掛かりに原書をすべて同定することは不可能であった。そこで、学習院が明治30 年以前に受入れた洋書のなかで明治10 年(1877 年)までに出版されたものを選び出してその蔵書印等を調査した結果、836 冊の華族会館旧蔵洋書を確認した。そうしてリストを作成すると、明治初期の新しい国造りに向けたコレクションが浮かび上がった。その多くは勝海舟をとおして徳川宗家から寄贈されたものである。Kazoku Kaikan, the Peer's Club established in 1874 by peers, former feudal lords and high court nobles, planned to have its library, and collected books. In 1877 Kazoku Kaikan founded the school named Gakushuin for the children of its members and transferred most of its book collections, 9,159 Japanese and Chinese books and 1,614 Western books to the library of the school, and became the patron of the library. This transfer and the history of individual book became traceable by the recent discovery of the catalogue, prepared in 1879 and written in Japanese under the title of Kazoku Kaikan Kizo-tosho Mokuroku, of the transferred books, within the Gakushuin University Library. The author found out 836 Western books bearing the ownership stamps of the Kazoku Kaikan in the Gakushuin University Library collection, by investigating the books published before 1877, and accepted by Gakushuin Library before 1897. These books were published in the United States of America, Great Britain, France, Germany, etc., and turned out to be a leading collection to promote modernization of Japan in early Meiji Era. Most of the literatures were contributed by the Tokugawa Shogunal Household by the arrangement of KATSU Kaishu. The story about the Japanese and Chinese books donated by the Tokugawa Shogunal Household was described before(No. 8 of this journal).
