I started teaching English about thirty-five years ago. First I taught just as my teachers taught. But I had to give up my teaching style at my second workplace, a techinical high school. The students hated my teaching and my class almost broke down. But luckily I met TM Method then, which was invented by Mr. and Ms. Terasima. It is a quite unique way of English teaching. It says, for one, in reading why not give a syntactical marker to the sentence and a meaning for every word, and in pronouncing add a rhythm marker and katakana for each word. After adopting this method they began joining the class and even feeling happy in learning. Here in this university, where I started teaching eight years ago, I have been designing my English lessons on the basis of TM Method.In this article I analyzed my oral classes of Les Miserables in the first semester of 2013, quoting some of my students' essays on their own learning. Here are some of the doctrines of this method whose efficacy I reaffirmed in this article-(1)Teach not all, but only the basics of English grammar (text or sound), especially for those who have had defeated experiences in their English learning. (2)Choose a moving and enlightening subject matter appropriated for university students. (3)Make the most difficult but motivating tasks and arrange them in a proper order. (4)Put in some collaborative tasks so that the students can enjoy learning together. (5)Design the 90-minute period with a change enbedded in the fixed pattern. (6)Give the learners repeated chances to try for the skill tests so that they can feel that they have done enough. I hope that I am successful in showing in this article how this method worked out to grow the motivated learners of English.
