The principal aim of the present study was to perform a quantitative analysis of Japanese Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) results from a private obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Nagasaki. We investigated how the response of "feeling somehow not right" on the EPDS from early ostpartum women in rest can be interpreted to lead to support. This study also discussed the possible effectiveness of the EPDS and clinical psychology support methods during the early postpartum period. The self-response questionnaire of the EPDS was conducted targeting postpartum women who had full-term pregnancy and normal delivery and who were either 1 month postpartum or 4 to 5 days postpartum in the hospital. Responses from 152 people (complete response rate: 94%) were received from both periods and targeted for analysis. Rather than focusing on postpartum depression in the EPDS evaluation method (Okano, 2005), the present study lowered the classification points from 9 to 7 as one approach so that postpartum women who feel "somehow not right," with symptoms such as mild depression, mild anxiety, mild selfcondemnation, mild functional incompetence in everyday life, or mild insomnia, are not overlooked or neglected. Our results showed no statistically significant difference in either period among both primiparae and multiparae, and it can be presumed that both primiparae and multiparae similarly feel "somehow not right," including feelings of anxiety and self-condemnation. Furthermore, because it was confirmed that both first-time pregnant women and multiparae feel "somehow not right," mainly harboring feelings of functional incompetence in various areas of life, and are unable to resolve these feelings, it will be necessary in the future to enhance the support system, introducing social resources, such as local housework and childcare help services, while also introducing psychological support that can be continuously utilized by postpartum women.
