In this report, we gave the modern Japanese translation to "Ittousa sensei kenpousyo (「一刀斎先生剣法書」)" from chapter 1 to 5, which was written by KOTOUDA Toshisada (「古藤田俊定」), and also regarded as the precedene form of the modern kendo instruction, And we tried to examine the meaning and content of the term of the technology in "Ittouryu (「一刀流」)". 1."Waza (「事」)" does not mean some technic, but shows the movement or motion to achive the maximum result. 2. "Kotowari (「理」)" is the theory which constitutes the movement showing the maximum mastering. Then, it can be shown by the metaphor "Suigetu (「水月」)", which means the relation of the surface of the tranquil water and the Moon. Here "Kotowari (「理」)" is not limited like "Waza (「事」)" to the world of the kendo. 3. "Zirihuhen (「事理不偏」)", which means the situation combined "Waza (「事」)"and "Kotowari (「理」)", seemed to be the automatic movement or motion. 4. "Zansin (「残心」)" means the situation reflected the figure of the enemy to himself. It is different from the meaning of the term of the present kendo. 5. "Isei (「威勢」)" is composed of "I (「威」)" and "Sei (「勢」)". "I (「威」)" incluides "Sei (「勢」)", similarly "Sei (「勢」)" incluides "I (「威」)". "Isei (「威勢」)" also potentially receives the theory of the Chinese Taoism (「道家」).
