ターナーの晩年の始まりは1836年であると,時に考えられることがある。それは,彼のもっともよく知られた作品,例えば『戦艦テメレール号』のような作品の幾つかを生み出した,60歳代の新しい時期の始まりでもあった。他方,ターナーの晩年は1831年のような早い時期からとみられる場合がある。それは二つの補足書を次の年に付けた,6月10日付の彼の最初の遺言書作成の年である。そしてそれはまた,この画家の周知のマーゲイトでの二重生活が始まった時期でもある。われわれは老いた芸術家の晩年につくられた作品のスタイルは,ついに衰え始めた彼の健康のように,質的に衰弱すると考えがちである。しかし晩年の芸術家の芸術は,かならずLも肉体的衰えに左右されるものとはかぎらない。最晩年のターナーの作品に関して,このような事柄を,本論は考察するものである。It is sometimes considered that 1836 marked the commencement of Turner's late period and it has also been suggested this new era in his sixties opened with the production of some of his most popular works, for example, 'The Fighting Temeraire'. On the other hand, it has been suggested his late period can be dated as early as 1831; the year of his first will dated 10 June which was amended by two codicils in 1832. It was at this time the artist began his famed double life at Margate. We are apt to think that the style of an aged artist's work,produced in his later years, declines in quality as his health at last began to fall. It is, however, arguable that the art produced by an artist in his later years is not always affected by any physical condition due to ill health. In this paper I would like to consider these matters as it relates to the last works by Turner.
