研究ノート応用言語学の分野で様々な成果を上げているジャンル分析の手法は、高等教育における言語教育に大きな影響を与えている。本稿では、ジャンル分析を言語教育研究の広いフィールドの中で再考し、ジャンル分析が日本の大学英語教育にどのような影響や貢献をもたらしてきたかを検証する。検証の過程で、ジャンル分析の視点から ESP( English for Specific Purposes) とEAP( English for Academic Purposes) の関連性について考察し、EAPはESPの二項対立概念ではなく、ESP に内包される一主要領域として位置づけられることを明確にする。そして、大学英語教育においてEAP を実践するにあたっては、教育目的の明確化と実質化を導くジャンル分析の手法が極めて有用であることを示す。Genre analysis has been one of the most useful as well as feasible research areas in the field of applied linguistics, and its influence on practices of language education has been significant. This article aims to reexamine genre analysis from the broader perspective of language teaching and learning, and consider its contributions to the college English education in Japan. In the process of reexamining genre analysis, the controversial distinction between ESP and EAP is discussed in search for a conceptually logical answer. From a genre theory point of view, EAP proves to be a major domain within ESP, which renders practical clues in constructing the college English curriculum in Japan.
