De docta ignorantia, a major writing by Nicolaus Cusanus, was criticized by Johannes Wenck in his writing, De ignota litteratura, which in turn was disputed by Cusanus in his rebuttal, Apologia doctae ignorantiae. This paper examines each author's contentions unfolded in the latter two writings and their background. First, on the problem of recognition, Cusanus contends that recognition by the intellect cannot attain to an understanding of the quiddity (quidditas) of things through analogy whereas Wenck admits the intellect's ability to recognize it through image and analogy from the standpoint of analogia entis proposed by Thomas Aquinas. Further, Wenck criticizes Cusanus' contention about coincidentia oppositorum as allowing the concordance between God and creatures and eventually destroying the Aristotelian "law of contradiction." In response, Cusanus stresses that between infinitus (God) and finitus (creatures) can there be no such comparison as presumed in the discussion on analogia entis. On the problem of God, Wenck perceives the possibility of Cusanus' argument destroying the Aristotelian concept of "the First mover," which in turn invalidates the Thomistic proof of God's existence. Cusanus, on the contrary, employs the theories of complicatio and explicatio to define movement as the expansion of God as the fundamental unity and explains the relationship between God and creatures from a non-Scholastic viewpoint. By reinforcing this viewpoint with the theory of contractio, which is his own idea regarding the problem of individuality and universality, Cusanus tries to ward off the suspicion of pantheism. The uniqueness of Cusanus' viewpoint can be identified in his seeing God as quidditas absoluta of all things and the "world" as quidditas contracta.
