The nutritional requirements for the vegetative growth of Sparassis crispa Wulf.:Fr. were investigated by use of a liquid culture medium. A wide range of carbohydrates served as carbon sources in the medium which supported the growth of S. crispa. Glucose, galactose, mannose, fructose, soluble starch, glycogen and dextrin were especially good carbon sources for mycelial growth. However, sorbose, lignin, cellulose, chitin and inositol were not effective as carbon sources. The optimal concentration of carbon source was less than 2% in the case of glucose, and the growth speed of mycelium fell by more than 3%. But in the case of soluble starch, there were also no declines in growth speed by 5% solution. Yeast extract, Soyton, polypeptone, meat extract, Casamino acid and the amino acids mixture were acceptable nitrogen sources for the growth, while ammonium and nitrate salts were poor nitrogen sources. Alanine, valine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, arginine, lysine and serine had an effect on the vegetative growth, but none provided comparable results to the amino acid mixture. The optimal concentration of nitrogen source in the medium was 0.01-0.04%.
