Individual trees of a stand are labeled with vinyl number-plates fastened with staples because of the convenience for recording trees. These vinyl number-plates are left in place. Wood discoloration and damage to young trees from the vinyl number-plates and the staples were investigated. Discoloration of wood on radial sections, vinyl number-plates overgrown and encased in wood, and parts of staples left in the wood were observed. Therefore, we must avoid the use of this method of numbering individual trees, especially on these parts used for lumber. If this numbering-method is used, the number-plates and staples must be removed as soon as possible.
