The Kuchino-erabujima Island has an active volcano, which has causeddevastation to the island throughout its history, and it also has a sulphur mine. Theisland has been suffering from rapid depopulation- an added problem to its smallpopulation. How has this society changed? Unfortunately there is little record offormal island history; its main record is not held on even in a bigger neighbouringisland. Therefore, we investigated the social mobility through pre-existing externaldata and maps with on-site verif ications. We demonstrate a case of an idealisticpreservation and display of resources in this paper: the "Resource Centre" locatedalong the corridor of the local elementary/junior high school. It displays and preservesarchaeological resources, tools, animal stuff ing, and local literatures. This has shiftedthe handicaps away from small island researchers of having limited resources. Thecase of Kuchino-erabujima Island provides an important example for small islandswithout resource centres: this empowers present and future generations to engage intheir life-long education of their own homeland as well as for island researchers.
