This paper focuses on representative works of sekai-kei(セカイ系)which came out in the 1990s and 2000s in Japanese subculture. Sekai-kei literally means "world-type", but セカイ("world" written in katakana) is different from 世界("world" in kanji). Then one question is, why is it that "world" is written in katakana? Furthermore, another question arises as to the storyline of the works of sekai-kei. In those works, a tiny relationship between two persons (you as a fighting cute girl and I as an ordinary boy) directly leads to a catastrophe of the world. What does the storyline mean? This paper illuminates the works of this genre in terms of sociocultural history of Japan.
