This is a brief investigation of biological dosimetry for human subjects. During the past decade techniques have been developed for the analysis of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes. As a result, a vast amount of studies on chromosome aberrations induced by radiation in human lymphocytes have been carried out. These studies have revealed the relationships between aberration frequencies and absorbed doses. At present this method appears to be the most readily quantifiable one of biological dosimetry available. The problems associated with the use of this method in estimating radiation dose are discussed. These problems include time of sampling after irradiation, culture time, dose rate, type of radiation, temperature at the time of irradiation, etc.

The causes of fires of plutonium and uranium in the nuclear facilities are summalized through the literature survey of accidents in the United States and the United Kingdom, and of metallurgical studies. It is noticeable that spontaneous ignition is due to the operations such as of degreasing, leaching, cutting and scraping, to the treatment with nitric acid, or to the existence of moisture, for example, after low-temperature experiment of the metals. The methods of fire-prevention and fire-fighting at the plutonium fires are also described with the recommendation on the view point of health physics: Aluminum icontaner is likely to have excellent property for the fire prevention. The data of particle size distribution and deposition velocity of plutonium emitted at the fire are also showed. Finally, the efficient agent and technique of fire extinguishing are described with some data from experiences in the accidents and the laboratory experiments.

For the purpose of utilizing radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in human peripheral blood lymphocytes as a means of dose evaluation in a criticality accident, a study was made of the relationship between fission neutron+gamma dose and the chromosome aberrations. Human peripheral blood lymphocytes were exposed in vitro to fission neutrons+gamma rays at Japan Research Reactor No. 4 for 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40min at 200kW. The cells were observed at their first mitotic division stage in culture. The frequency of the chromosome aberrations per cell, Y, was expressed as a power function of exposure time in minutes, t, as follows: Y=0.0018t1.12.On the assumption that there was no mutual interaction between chromosome aberrations induced by the neutrons and those by gamma rays and that there was similarity of the effects of the gamma rays produced in fissions and those of Co-60 gamma ays, estimation was made of contribution of the gamma rays to total yields. However, there was a contradiction that the contribution of gamma rays exceeded the total yield.
