Friedrich Schiller is the only person that Paul de Man, a Belgian literary critic and theorist, endo- wed with the privileged status of the bearer of what he called “aesthetic ideology.” According to de Man, this is mainly because of Schiller’s misunderstanding of Kant’s aesthetics. By way of questio- ning and developing Schiller’s reception of Kant in his Aesthetic Education of Man, my studies shed light on de Man’s materialism discovered by his meticulous reading of Kant’s Critique of Judgment against Schiller’s ideology. I then remark on de Man’s task of historical materialism interrupted by his death.
