In most of industrialized countries total fertility rates show a marked fall since mid-1970s. The case is different in Sweden. In this welfare state the fertility which had swung upward rapidly in the latter half of 1980 has declined in early 1990s. The purpose of this paper is to study the fertility dynamics in Sweden. The future demographic situation in Sweden may assume a serious phase in consideration to the change of attitudes concerning fertility and family formation, the Scandinavian nihilism and the economic rationalism.
