In recent years, the small island nick named as 'Gunkanjima' (formal name "Hashima") located in the southwest of the Nagasaki harbor attracted a lot of attention. Historically Gunkanjima, an island rich of coalmine supported modernization of Japan by supplying invaluable energy. However, abrupt shift in energy use during the 1970s forced the closure of the mines in this island on January 15, 1974. Eventually, since almost thirty years this island became an uninhabited island. But still there are many cultural heritages valuable from scientific standpoint left in the island, including the first Reinforced Concrete Apartment Building in Japan. In this paper, we have summarized the results of the interview with the former residents of this island and also the field survey in "Gunkanjima". This investigative study indicated that, the community structures followed by the residents of this island in those days, can be an ideal model to solve the present social problems arising in Japan. The results of the study also revealed the immense importance of Gunkanjima to be preserved as an industrial heritage, symbolizing the industrial growth of Japan. Hence got sufficient potential to be utilized as a scientific research center for the future generation and which in turn would promote revitalization of the surrounding areas.

In this paper the authors carried out a barrier-free survey and tried to make a toilet map in the builing of Faculty of Engineering, Nagasaki University. Because of being a public facility, Nagasaki University is used by a lot of peoples including the disabled. Owing to the barrier-free survey with a wheelchair it was cleared that there are many barriers such as stairs, gloomy passages, and a narrow lift in the building. In a toilet map presented here not only the location but the kind of toilets are shown together with the location of stairs, slopes and the lift. Lastly the authors made a few proposals in order to improve facilities in the Faculty for barrier-free ones.
