About 2000 wooden structures were surveyed through 81. 6 ha, the seismic intensity was over 7, in Higashi Nada ward in Kobe-city where had been seriously damaged by the Hyogo-ken-Nanbu earthquake on Jan. 17th '95. The problems of the traditional Japanese post and beam wooden structures houses of two stories or less are not only pointed out, but also the cause of mechanism of collapses were determined according to the close investigation of 185 units through the seismic destruction area. It is recognised that quite numbers of the small and narrow houses with dry-wall exterior finish collapsed among many other Japanese traditional wooden structures with mud-wall exterior finish. The primary cause of collapses of these houses was that the structural planning was ignored on their floor planning.

The formula for the full plastic nail arrangement modulus Zpxy which is used in the calculation of the ultimate shear capacity of the sheathed shear walls with any nail arrangement was theoretically derived by using the upper bound theorem.The unknown values are the rotation ratio (θx/θy) and the neutral axis positions (xo and yo) in the calculation.The difference between the calculation with the elastic values and the plastic values as unknown values is within 1.5%.

This paper proposes the evaluation method of seismic performance of shear resisting elements in timber construction with shear walls. Proposed new evaluation method uses two parameters of horizontal stiffness and potential energy of the shear walls. These two design values provide horizontal damage limit and safety limit strengths of stories that have equal quality to those by the summation of load-deformation curves of the shear walls. These strengths by this method have less variety than those by existing simple evaluation method. This method also provides Ds values of stories that consist of different type of shear walls. Ds values of the stories have not been provided by the existing simple evaluation method. Precise safety limit strengths and Ds-values of the stories realize to apply horizontal load-carrying capacity design method for the structures with different type of shear walls. This evaluation method would be possible to apply for other structures than the timber construction as a simplified method.

This report presented a database of shear properties of nail and screw while they are driven on sheets to timber frames. Based on our experiments varying with the thickness of sheathing materials and type of nail and screw classified as 86 types, the database table has shown stiffness, equivalent shear strength and ultimate displacement which are evaluated with method of allowable stress design for conventional post and beam structures by Japan Housing & Wood Technology Center.
