1926(大正15)年に宣教師団を率いて来日したサレジオ会イタリア人神父ヴィンチェンツォ・チマッティは、布教のために日本語の学習に励んだ。しかしながら、非効率的な学習環境により、その高い志にもかかわらず日本語の習得は高い水準には達しなかった。当然ながら個人的な能力の問題もあろうが、時期的には、外国人の視点からの日本語研究も日本国内で行われ、また、イタリア国内でも当時日本語教育が行われていた事実もあることから、学習に必要な情報及び教材の欠如・不足がその主たる要因であると結論づけた。

Missionaries in Japan have always had to overcome language difficulties to fulfill their tasks, and consequently they have in many cases produced insightful analyses of grammatical characteristics and vocabularies of the Japanese language since the time of Saint Francis Xavier in the sixteenth century. This paper presents introductory remarks about the research on Fr. Vincenzo Cimatti, who brought the Salesian society of Roman Catholic Christianity to Japan in 1926, and his great efforts toward the Japanese language acquisition. The study on the extraordinary life and work of Fr. Vincenzo Cimatti will contribute to the research field of inter-cultural communication since the field still waits for advancement of historical explorations.
