与論島では昭和54年をピークに観光客が減少していくなかで、様々なイベントを企画することによって、シーズンオフ期の冬場の観光客の開拓と誘致を積極的にはかってきた。従来の若者中心のビーチ観光やマスツーリズムから、ブーム後は様々なイベントの企画によって幅広い年齢層、多様な観光客の誘致を目指して大きく方向転換した。また、ブーム期は兼業農家が激増したが、ブーム後は兼業農家が減少し専業農家が増え、脱観光産業化と農業重視の方向性が顕著である。特に、切り花や輸送野菜への多角化と畜産の比重が増大した。観光も、受動的観光から能動的観光へ、量から質の観光へ、自然依存型から自然利用型観光へ、娯楽型から健康・癒しの観光へ、農業と観光の分離から連携へ、個人から島民全体の観光へ、夏型から通年型観光へとシフトし、「健康・癒し」を軸にセルフイメージの構築と差別化の過程にある。"Tourism in Yoron had its peak in 1979 and after that the number of tourists decreased markedly. After the boom, Yoron islanders have ever been trying to bring tourists back again by creating various kinds of events and attractions not only in summer but also in off-seasons. During the boom, farmers were more depending on tourist industries. A fter the boom, they are more depending on agriculture and stock breeding. Tourism in Yoron also sifted from passive to active, from quantitative to qualitative, from amusement to health oriented, and from summer to all year round type tourism. Yoron island seems to be still in the process of constructing self-image to differentiate her from other touristic sites by focusing on 'health and healing'."
