In this paper, in order to confirm the relationship between the ego and the other, I checked the words of self-expression, “Ware”( I ) and “Ware-nagara” (even I), featured in Diary Literature which is autobiographical. In the four diary works of the Heian Epoch there aren’t many examples of “Ware”, the word indicating oneself, and there are no examples of “Ware-nagara”, the word meaning the spirit of self-reflection. Moreover, uses of the word “Ware” in works of the Heian Epoch differ remarkably. On the other hand, in medieval epochs, self-consciousness arose and uses of “Ware” and “Warenagara” increased. This means that, in the diary works of the medieval epoch, each author emphasized the unique character of his or her life. The authors reject the other but, in writing diary literature, they reconsider their lives and seek sympathy by narrating their lives to others.
