Names of Japanese liverworts and hornworts (their Phyla, Classes, Orders, Families and Genera) are arranged according to recent accepted taxonomic opinion following Crandall-Stotler et al. (2009) for liverworts and Renzaglia et al. (2008) for hornworts. The checklist of Japanese liverworts and hornworts (Katagiri & Furuki 2012) is updated and includes two additional species: Sphaerocarpos donnellii and Trichocolea japonica new to the Japanese flora and nomenclatural changes for the Japanese species of Cleveaceae based on literature published after 1st January 2011. The Japanese name for each of the taxa is also given.

Eleven bryophyte fossils from the Pleistocene of the Shiobara Group, Tochigi Prefecture, were studied using a stereo microscope. Based on the detailed morphological observations, eight moss species and three liverwort species were identified. Mosses include Plagiomnium maximoviczii(Lindb.) T.J.Kop., a species of Calliergon, a species of Amblystegiaceae, a species of Polytrichaceae, a species of Dicranaceae, and three species of Hypnobryales. Liverworts include Odontoschisma fluitans(Nees) L.Söderstr. & Vá㶡a, a species of Jungermanniales, and a species of Marchantiales. It is interesting to find the inclusion of the species that grow around wet habitats such as P. maximoviczii, a species of Calliergon, a species of Amblystegiaceae and O. fluitans. We consider that this reflects the bryoflora of the lakeside of Pleistocene Shiobara Lake.

Marchantia polymorpha L. subsp. polymorpha (=M. polymorpha var. aquatica Nees) has been found in Ozegahara Moor (Niigata Prefecture, Central Honshu). It is the first Japanese collection since the early 1950s. During a field survey in Ozegahara Moor we found it in a wetland (36°56'43"N, 139°14'34"E, 1400 m elev.) located to the east of Toudengoya Hut. This place has heavy snowfall in all months except for July to October and is dominated by Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., where M. polymorpha subsp. polymorpha shows turf-forming habit with erect thalli and mat-forming habit with prostrate thalli. Although several plants with prostrate thalli occasionally bear gemma cups and become broader (to 10 mm) with wider branching angles (40-45°) than typical plants with erect thalli, the presence of black midline of thallus and the entire to crenulate ventral scale appendages are stable among populations.

In Japan 625 species in 146 genera of liverworts and 17 species in 6 genera of hornworts are recognized. Many nomenclatural changes, a number of new species and infraspecific taxa (subspecies or varieties) of liverworts and hornworts have been reported for the Japanese flora since the previous checklist of Furuki & Mizutani (2004) which recognized 614 species in 134 genera of liverworts and 17 species in 6 genera of hornworts. Current names of Japanese liverworts and hornworts are alphabetically listed with annotations. In the annotations, the taxonomy, nomenclature and synonymy of many of the accepted species and infraspecific taxa (subspecies or varieties) are discussed briefly, based primarily on recent literature sources published up to 31st December 2010 and the authors' observation. One new combination: Sphenolobus ellipticus (Inoue) T.Katag. & Furuki and one new name: Chiloscyphus yezoensis T.Katag. & Furuki are proposed. Cololejeunea pakseana Tixier is newly synonymized with C. uchimae Amakawa. Names of uncertain application and those reported in error from Japan are appended. Homotypic (nomenclatural) synonyms are indicated in the annotations by the symbol = and heterotypic (taxonomic) synonyms by the symbol =.
