Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) is known in the history of Western education as “the teacher of Germany.” He laid the foundation of the new educational system for modern Germany. The basic structure of his thought combines the spirit of Luther's Reformation and the tradition of humanism. In Japan, however, detailed research into his educational thought has rarely been conducted. Moreover, the same point applies to his Christian faith. For Melanchthon, the final aim of education is the promotion of religious piety. He tried to achieve this aim through catechism. Again, a detailed study of his catechism is yet to be done. By examining his original text, the present paper clarifies the principles and method of Christian character building through catechism.Section 1 explains a feature specific to Melanchthon's Christian view of human beings : his focus on the “rebirth” of man. Section 2 clarifies the composition, contents and method of catechism, a catechism as a means to “rebirth.” Section 3 discusses the third usage of the Law by Melanchthon.Melanchthon always explored the method of awaking man to “conscience.” His methodology presupposed the limit of education by man. To elucidate his theory of education, there is still much to be done.
