The purpose of this study is to devise/establish 'Maskmaking with hobby clay (stone powder clay) using the Nebuta mask technique' as a thematic hypothesis, and examine its validity in practice. Students in the firstyear Drawing and Handicrafts course at the Miyagi University of Education Faculty of Education were asked to make the masks, and were surveyed on completion of the project by means of a worksheet. Exploring assessment indicators for this theme in this manner confirmed aspects of the theme deserving of retention, and points for improvement. Thus there was feedback from a learning assessment viewpoint on howthe set theme worked, resulting ultimately in a proposed improved version. No doubt it will become an even more effective theme than ever for enhancing students' modeling capabilities.
