Natsume Soseki is the greatest and most popular novelist of modern Japan. He published his first novel Wagahai wa neko de aru in 1905. Soseki described this work as a humorous novel. In this paper, I have tried to analyse his humor and rhetoric. To this end, I have pointed out his new and original compounds, such as kakisemei (oyster-teacher), gokurakushugi (paradise-ism) and so on. These compounds cause us amusement. Soseki uses the style of ordinary conversation and strings many words together, as in the following example : "shafu, batei, buraikan, gorotsuki-shosei, hiyatoi-babaa, samba, yoba, anma, tonma ni itaru made" ("from start to finish a rickshaw-man, stableman, rogue, hooligan-scholar, old charwoman, midwife, witch, massagist, ass"). This pattern of expression is typical of his writing. Soseki displays striking originality in his similes and metaphors.Natsume Soseki is the greatest and most popular novelist of modern Japan.
