The purpose of this paper is to make a thorough and complete interpretation of the animated movie Tonarino Totoro, the masterpiece produced and directed by Miyazaki Hayao. The director projects the image of the mother onto nature in this movie, and the realized world in this story, the whole space of fiction, is encompassed by the mother of nature. This makes possible a Utopia where everything is in harmony in an ideal way and where the innocence of children is not only protected but also exercised to perfection, which moves those who watch this movie. Miyazaki wants to embody such an ideal childhood as is shown in the Utopia of this movie. It is a fact that he himself didn't spend a happy childhood like this in me real world, and this has led him to satisfy his hunger for it by realizing it in this fictional world.
