The historiography of eighteenth-century adultery has developed through studies focusing on the law and on the roles of gender and the media. They reveal a process of gradual sexual liberation and also a persistent sexual double standard, but the question of how women facing marital breakdown developed a sense of their matrimonial rights, both in and outside thecourts, has not yet been discussed. This article critically examines the relevant studies since the 1980s and suggests that future studies should broaden their perspective by taking into account private negotiation, the role of family, and women’s self-representation in the media.
