Some school buildings of a circular type are demolished at present. A purpose of this study is to historically position a circular type of school building which spread in showa 30's. This paper clarifies reasons why the type spread and declined. Specially the theory is developed about an architect Kanao Sakamoto who advocated the type on paper. The reasons why it spread are as follows. 1. It became feasible to construct it legally, economically and technologically. 2. The theory of Mr. Sakamoto met the needs of the times. 3. He designed many buildings of the type. 4. The type was acknowledged as one of the current against a standardized plan of school building. The reasons why it declined are as follows. 1. The type designed by other architects were criticized. 2. The type designed by Mr. Sakamoto became another standardized plan. 3. The newer stream, which laid stress on activity and life of children, became the main.
