Araneus is a large genus containing many species with various features, and phylogenetic analysis has revealed it to be a polyphyletic group. It has been proposed that nine new genera should be established independently from Araneus. One example is a group that includes Araneus mitificus (Simon 1886) and Araneus praesignis (L. Koch 1872). In this study, we examined specimens from several species that are morphologically similar to them, and confirmed their close relationship by phylogenetic analysis using the data of five genes. All targeted species were united in a monophyletic clade, comprising two groups in detail. The epigynes and male palps of the species in these two groups were clearly distinguishable; therefore, we concluded that they should be recognized as two independent genera. Consequently, we describe two new genera, Aoaraneus n. gen. and Bijoaraneus n. gen. Additionally, previously identified Japanese Araneus mitificus specimens were reexamined and concluded to be misidentified. It is described as a new species under the name Bijoaraneus komachi n. sp. in this study.

The Taiwanese and Japanese spiders which have been identified with Cyrtophora moluccensis (Doreshall 1857) are taxonomically revised. Three color morphs, yellow-, green-, and red-types, show their own discrete monophyletic clades in the phylogenetic tree inferred by Neighbor Joining method using the partial sequences of mt-16S-rRNA genes. P-distances within group means are 0.2% in the yellow-type, 0.1% in the green-type, and 0% in the red-type. P-distances between group means are 18.8% between yellow- and green-types, 19.4% between yellow- and red-types, 10% between green- and red-types. These three color morphs can be separated also by the shapes of epigynum and male palp. Consequently we recognize them as three independent nominal species and determined the yellow-type as C. cylindroides (Walckenaer 1842), the green-type as C. moluccensis (Doleschall 1857), and the red-type as C. ikomosanensis (Bösenberg & Strand 1906).

In this short paper, we report the predation of an orb-weaving spider Neoscona sp. (Araneae: Araneidae) by a corinnid sac spider Corinnomma severum (Araneae: Corinnidae) from Thailand. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of predation of web-building spider by a spider of the genus Corinnomma observed in the field.

A new araneid species Zygiella hiramatsui n. sp. is described using specimens obtained from Amami-ôshima Island, Japan. This species can be distinguished from allied Z. dispar by the much wider median area of the epigyne, or an unnamed apophysis neighboring the embolus that is short and truncated and a horn shaped apophysis of the tegulum in the male palp. It is uncommon for Zygiella spiders to inhabit subtropical regions, but this is the case for Z. hiramatsui n. sp. So it might be introduced previously into Amami-ôshima Is. from unknown habitat.

Japanese spiders of the genus Dolomedes are revised and its phylogeny is inferred by mt-DNA. Dolomedes japonicus Bösenberg & Strand 1906 and D. angustivirgatus Kishida 1936 are removed from the synonymy. Dolomedes fimbriatoides Bösenberg & Strand 1906 and D. hinoi Kayashima 1952 are newly synonymized with D. sulfureus L. Koch 1878, and D. stellatus Kishida 1936 is synonimized with D. japonicus. Two new species, D. fontus and D. silvicola are described. Relative leg length and proportion of male palpal tibia are considered as good keys to indentify Dolomedes spiders, whose genital organs closely resemble one another. Dolomedes sulfureus and D. silvicola, often found on vegetation, have much longer legs and male palpal tibia than their relatives that inhabit near water and run on water surface or hide under water when disturbed. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using mt-COI revealed the following; ((((raptor, yawatai), japonica), orion), (((angustivirgatus, sulfureus), fontus), (silvicola, saganus)), horishanus).

Three new species of Pseudopoda, P. tatsumii n. sp. (♂♀), P. kenmun n. sp. (♂♀), and P. tokunoshimana n. sp. (♂♀), are described from Amami-oshima Is. and Tokunoshima Is., Japan, and a synopsis of Japanese species of the genus is provided. Four of the Japanese species cannot be distinguished based solely on general appearance, although can be separated by male palpal morphology, particularly the embolus. The epigynes are somewhat variable and insufficiently distinct to enable reliable species discrimination. The three species on Amami-oshima Island are parapatric, with unexpectedly narrow distribution ranges.

After examining many specimens identified as Cyrtarachne inaequalis Thorell 1895 from various localities in Japan, females from Okinawajima Is. were found to be morphologically distinguishable from those from the Mainland and to be the independent species, while unidentified male specimens from Okinawajima Is. were found. A comparison of mt-DNA COI gene sequencing data revealed that the males and females from Okinawajima Is. belonged to the same species. The female specimens from the Mainland and Okinawajima Is. were compared with syntypes of C. inaequalis, but neither of the two species could be identified using this approach. Consequently, it was concluded that both of these species are new to science. They are described under the names C. akirai n. sp. (from the Mainland) and C. jucunda n. sp. (from Okinawajima Is.).

Dolomedes senilis Simon 1880 is newly recorded from Japan using the specimens collected from Hokkaido. The species is easily separated from other Japanese congeners by its unique appearance. One new species Dolomedes pegasus is also described using specimens collected from Tohoku district, northern part of Honshu, Japan. Dolomedes pegasus resembles D. sulfureus and D. angustivirgatus, but can be distinguished from them by shorter legs, barrel-shaped epigynum, shorter male palpal tibia and smaller tibial apophysis. The mt-COI partial sequence data of these species as well as D. zatsun are added to the previous data set and their phylogenetic placements among Japanese species are inferred. As a result, D. senilis and D. pegasus share the same clade with D. sulfureus, and D. zatsun shares the same clade with D. raptor.

As a result of a series of faunal surveys of spiders of Okinawa Prefecture, southernmost Japan, following seven species were recognized to occur in the family Pisauridae: Hygropoda higenaga (Kishida 1936), Perenethis venusta L. Koch 1878, Dolomedes yawatai Ono 2002, D. orion n. sp., D. zatsun n. sp., D. horishanus Kishida 1936, and Pisaura bicornis Zhang & Song 1992. Descriptions of the two new species, Dolomedes orion and D. zatsun, are presented. Dolomedes horishanus and Pisaura bicornis are the species whose occurrences in Japan were recognized for the first time. Redescriptions of those two species based on the specimens collected from Okinawa Prefecture are also provided. Dolomedes mizhoanus Kishida 1936 known from Taiwan is newly synonymized with D. horishanus. D. yawatai, which was described from Ishigaki-jima Island, was found to occur also in Iriomote-jima Island. D. okinavensis Kishida 1924 is considered as nomen dubium and hence removed from the species list of Japanese Pisauridae.

The large orb-weaving spider genus Araneus consists of numerous species with highly variable morphologies and behaviors, and phylogenetic analyses have suggested that the genus is polyphyletic. Here, we investigated the specimens of Araneus viridiventris Yaginuma 1969, A. noegeatus (Thorell 1895), and an undescribed species. They were morphologically similar to each other but differed from the type species of Araneus. Following our molecular phylogenetic analysis using the sequencing data of five genes, we describe a new genus, Leviaraneus n. gen., which contains these species. They are small spiders with a broad, green abdomen. Moreover, we described the unknown species as a new species, Leviaraneus halabala n. sp. Additionally, Leviaraneus noegeatus n. comb. is newly recorded from Thailand, and its male is described for the first time.

A small orb-web spider species, Gea subarmata Thorell 1890, was newly recorded from Japan. The previously known distribution of G. subarmata ranged from India to New Guinea, and its closest known habitat to Japan was in the Philippines. The specimen was collected at a resort hotel, and no other specimen could be found; therefore, it seemed that the species is not native, but rather introduced. The genus Gea was also newly recorded from Japan.

A new species of Cyrtophora is described on the basis of specimens collected from Trang Province, Thailand, under the name of Cyrtophora sextuberculata n. sp. This species can be distinguished from other congeners by the elongated abdomen having three pairs of tubercles. The shape of epigyne of this species resembles that of C. crassipes (Rainbow 1897), but the abdomen of the latter has only a pair of dorsal tubercles and bifurcated posterior end. The male of the latter species is still unknown.

A new species of the spider genus Anyphaena (Araneae: Anyphaenidae), Anyphaena yoshitakei sp. nov., is described on the basis of specimens obtained from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The male palpal structure of this species is similar to those of males of A. taiwanensis and A. pugil, but this species can be distinguished by the lack of palpal femur spines. The female can be easily distinguished from females of Asian congeneric species by the shape of the longitudinal middle furrow of the epigyne.

A new atypid species, Atypus wataribabaorum, is described using the specimens from Amami-ôshima Is., the Nansei-Isls., Southwest Japan. This is the first record of Atypus from a subtropical region of Japan. Atypus wataribabaorum has 3 segmented posterior lateral spinnerets as A. affinis and piceus, but can be distinguished from A. affinis by 1) the position of sigilla I being close to the margin of sternum, 2) having prolateral furrow on male palpal femur, 3) the presense of spines on male metatarsus IV; and from piceus by having four receptacula.
