In Japanese, the ru-form and ta-form of the predicates represent aspectual and temporal information. Using these forms correctly is very difficult for those learning Japanese. One of the reasons it is so difficult stems from the fact that the meaning of these two forms in subordinate clauses is very different from that when used in main clauses. The former is called “relative tense”, and the latter “absolute tense”.While a lot of analyses have been carried out about this so far, most aim at explaining the system of the tense and aspect itself, but have not been done from a pedagogical point of view. Considering the present situation, this paper seeks to find an effective way to make learners understand the aspectual and temporal meanings of ru-form and ta-form in subordinate clauses in addition to learning the correct usage of these forms by focusing on the noun-modifying clause.
