We are planning to explore the caverns through the skylight holes on the Moon and Mars. The holes and their associated subsurface caverns are among the most important future exploration targets. The importance of the lunar and Martian holes and their associated caverns is categorized from two aspects: (1) fresh materials are easily observed and sampled there, and (2) the subsurface caverns provide a safe, quiet environment. The expectation of lunar and Martian hole and cavern exploration is increasing in Japan. We name the project as UZUME (Unprecedented Zipangu (Japan) Underworld of the Moon Exploration) whose name is after a Japanese mythology. The ultimate purpose of the UZUME project is to investigate how to expand human activity and survival in space and on extraterrestrial bodies.

Recently, various mobile communication systems have been widely deployed, and mobile traffic is increasing. However, the bandwidth available for mobile communications is limited, hence the scarcity of radio resources in mobile communications is a serious problem. As an approach to solve this problem, cognitive wireless communication models have been proposed. These model search for vacant time slots in multi-channel wireless communication systems. Although previous studies have shown that frequency utilization efficiency can be improved by multi-armed bandit algorithms, channels are assumed to be independent. However, channels used in 2.4 GHz wireless LANs (such as IEEE802.11b or IEEE802.11g) are not independent because these channels overlap with adjacent channels. In this paper, we propose an extended multi-armed bandit algorithm that uses continuous-valued rewards, which is applicable to wireless communication systems with overlapping channels. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method by experimental demonstrations.

We report a case of secondary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) after azacitidine (AZA) treatment in a 63-years-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome. The patient suffered from febrile neutropenia after 10 cycles of AZA treatment. Despite the performance of a whole-body CT scan, which showed a multifocal low-density area in the liver and a multifocal nodular shadow in the lung, no malignant neoplasms could be detected. An autopsy was performed 6 months later, and a histopathological examination of the lesions of the liver and lung revealed the infiltration of large round-shaped tumor cells with necrotizing lesions. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for CD20 and EBER, indicating EBV-positive DLBCL as a secondary malignancy.

Bach2 is a transcription factor which represses its target genes and plays important roles in the differentiation of B and T lymphoid cells. Bach2-deficient (KO) mice develop severe pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, which is associated with increased numbers of granulocytes and T cells. Bach2 is essential for the regulation of T cells, but its role in the regulation of granulocytes is not clear. Here, we observed increased numbers of eosinophils but not neutrophils in the bone marrow, spleen, peripheral blood, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluids of Bach2 KO mice compared with those of wild-type (WT) mice. Upon co-transplantation of the bone marrow cells from CD45.2 Bach2 KO and CD45.1/CD45.2 double-positive WT mice to irradiated WT CD45.1/CD45.2 mice, the reconstituted numbers of eosinophils were similar between Bach2 KO and WT cells. These results showed that the deficiency of Bach2 in eosinophils did not directly drive the differentiation of eosinophils. To investigate the effect of Bach2 KO CD4+ T cells upon eosinophils, we analyzed Rag2/Bach2-double deficient (dKO) mice which lack lymphocytes including CD4+ T cells. Rag2/Bach2 dKO mice did not show any increase in the numbers of eosinophils. Importantly, Bach2 KO mice showed an increase of interleukin-5 (Il-5) in the sera compared with WT mice. These results suggest that up-regulated functions of CD4+ T cells including secretion of Il-5 resulted in proliferation and/or migration to peripheral tissues of eosinophils in Bach2 KO mice. We propose that Bach2 controls homeostasis of eosinophils via restricting the production of Il-5 in CD4+ T cells.
