Infection of the type II feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) strain 79-1146 to primary feline alveolar macrophages and human monocyte cell line U937 was enhanced by the sera of cats experimentally infected with the 79-1146 strain, but not those of cats infected with KU-2 or UCD-1 strain of type I FIPV. The experiments using sera of cats with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) and of cats naturally infected with feline coronavirus (FCoV) revealed that infection of the FIPV 79-1146 strain to the U937 cells was enhanced only by the sera of cats infected with type II FIPV or feline enteric coronavirus. The samples positive for antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) activity had high neutralizing antibody titers against the FIPV 79-1146 strain and the samples negative for ADE activity had low neutralizing antibody titers. These findings support the previous results where a monoclonal antibody with neutralizing activity had high ADE activity, suggesting that there was a close relationship between the neutralization and enhancement sites. And then it is also suggested that ADE of infection is likely to be induced by re-infection with the same serotype of virus in type II FIPV infection. Furthermore, U937 cells are considered useful and can be substituted for the feline macrophages for determining ADE of FIPV-infection.

The standard procedure to treat oronasal fistula in dogs requires tooth extraction to close the fistula; hence, the subject would lose its tooth. In this study, trafermin was applied to four dog models with oronasal fistula to investigate the periodontal tissue regenerative effects of trafermin in the treatment without tooth extraction. A fistula was created along the palatal side of each upper canine tooth. One of the fistulae was filled with trafermin, whereas that on the contralateral side was left unfilled as a control. The results showed a significant decrease in the non-calcified periodontal tissue volume on the trafermin side after the fourth week. In addition, oronasal fistula closure was visually and histologically confirmed at the eighth week on the trafermin side of all four models.

A 40-year-old Japanese woman presented to our hospital with general fatigue and muscle weakness. She had a history of premature loss of deciduous teeth at 4 years old, her serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was as low as 91 U/L, and radiologic studies revealed thoracic deformity and sacroiliac calcification. Genetic sequencing revealed a heterozygous c.1559delT mutation in the tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase gene (ALPL). Based on these findings, she was diagnosed with hypophosphatasia (HPP), and treatment with asfotase alfa, a recombinant human tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP), was initiated. After six months of treatment with asfotase alfa, improvements were observed in the SF-36 score, six-minute walk distance, and grasping power. Although the overdiagnosis needs to be avoided, HPP should be considered in patients with undiagnosed musculoskeletal symptoms and a low serum ALP activity.

The purposes of this study were to classify jumping techniques in the preparatory and take-off phases of elite male long jumpers in official competitions by using a cluster analysis and to identify biomechanical characteristics of classified technique types. The preparatory and take-off motions of 29 elite male long jumpers in official competitions were collected three-dimensionally using two high-speed cameras. Their jumps were classified into four types of jumping technique by using the Ward’s method of cluster analysis with the take-off angle as a parameter. The four types were named the Horizontal (H-type), Semi-Horizontal (SH-type), Semi-Vertical (SV-type), and Vertical (V-type) types. There were no significant differences in jumping distance among the types. H-type jumpers were characterised by a forward lean of the trunk and a larger swing leg knee flexion during the preparatory phase. V-type jumpers flexed the knee joint of the support leg more during support phase in the last stride and showed a larger backward lean of the trunk at touchdown of the take-off foot. SH- and SV-types were located between H-type and V-type jumpers. This classification will help coaches and jumpers to select appropriate techniques.

The effect of tetrapod-shaped alpha tricalcium phosphate granules (Tetrabones® [TB]) in combination with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-binding ion complex gel (f-IC gel) on bone defect repair was examined. Bilateral segmental defects 20-mm long were created in the radius of 5 dogs, stabilized with a plate and screws, and implanted with 1 of the following: TB (TB group), TB and bFGF solution (TB/f group), and TB and f-IC gel (TB/f-IC group). Dogs were euthanized 4 weeks after surgery. Radiographs showed well-placed TB granules in the defects and equal osseous callus formation in all the groups. Histomorphometry revealed that the number of vessels and volume of new bone in the TB/f-IC group were significantly higher than those in the other groups. However, no significant differences in neovascularization and new bone formation were observed between the TB/f and TB groups. Furthermore, no significant difference in the lamellar bone volume or rate of mineral apposition was observed among groups. These results suggest that increased bone formation might have been because of the promotion of neovascularization by the f-IC gel. Therefore, the combinatorial method may provide a suitable scaffold for bone regeneration in large segmental long bone defects.
