A 15-year-old, spayed female, Scottish Straight cat without any traumatic history was presented with swollen abdomen and diagnosed as an abdominal wall hernia. Abdominal ultrasound revealed thickened, irregular, and hypoechoic change of abdominal wall muscle adjacent to defect. During the herniorrhaphy, multiple nodules were identified in the subcutaneous tissue around the defect. Histological examination of the nodular tissue was performed, and it was confirmed as mammary gland tumor. After the surgery, metastatic changes of the pancreas were identified, and pleural effusion and ascites were also confirmed. The patient deteriorated rapidly and died 78 days after the surgery. This is the first case presenting abdominal wall hernia induced by malignant tumor in veterinary medicine.

A seven-month-old cat was referred for evaluation of exercise intolerance and open-mouth breathing. Based on ultrasonographic examination, caudal vena cava (CVC) aneurysm associated with right congestive heart failure resulting from congenital heart disease was diagnosed. Conservative treatment for alleviating pulmonary hypertension mildly improved the clinical signs and decreased the heart size and CVC aneurysm diameter. However, the improvements were transient and four months after initiating therapy, the cat developed dyspnea and uncontrollable seizures and was euthanized.

An 11-year-old, castrated male, Yorkshire Terrier was presented with acute vomiting after chicken bone ingestion. The dog had been diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism previously and showed acute splenomegaly and signs of systemic inflammatory response syndrome during hospitalization. On diagnostic imaging, acute splenic vein thrombosis was found, concurrent with pancreatitis and gastritis. The spleen showed marked enlargement and hypoechoic lacy appearances on ultrasonography, mimicking splenic torsion. On the histopathologic report, only splenic hemorrhage and congestion with large splenic vein thrombosis were identified. After splenectomy, the dog completely recovered and was discharged.

This study aimed to demonstrate the higher accuracy and reproducibility of quantitative computed tomography (QCT) compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a gold standard for measuring canine bone mineral density (BMD). Seven middle-aged beagle dogs underwent lumbar vertebral and bilateral femoral DXA and QCT scans. BMD (mg/cm2) was measured at the vertebral body from L2 to L6, femoral neck, and proximal and distal femoral diaphyses. The BMD values were measured 3 times and compared. The BMD value on QCT was higher than that on DXA for femoral BMD but not for vertebral BMD. The correlation was strong for the lumbar vertebrae (r=0.66) and was strongest for L3 (r=0.85). No correlation was found for the femoral neck (P=0.35), and only moderate correlations were found for the proximal and distal femoral diaphyses (r=0.43 and r=0.40, respectively). The limits of agreement were narrower for vertebral BMD than for femoral BMD, and L3 had the narrowest limits of agreement. The intraclass correlation (ICC) was higher for DXA than for QCT at all lumbar and femoral sites measured, but the ICC of QCT was higher than 0.7. In conclusion, L3 can be used to monitor changes in BMD, and relative values and sequential monitoring of femoral BMD can also be useful because of the high reproducibility of QCT measurements. QCT would be a useful technique for evaluation of BMD in veterinary practice.

A 14-year-old dog weighing 4 kg presented with hypotension only in the right forelimb. Thoracic radiography revealed a round soft tissue opacity near the aortic arch and below the second thoracic vertebra on a lateral view. Three-dimensional computed tomography angiography clearly revealed stenosis and aneurysmal dilation of an aberrant right subclavian artery. Stenosis and aneurysm of an aberrant subclavian artery should be included as a differential diagnosis in dogs showing a round soft tissue opacity near the aortic arch and below the thoracic vertebra on the lateral thoracic radiograph.

This study describes the imaging features and characteristics of caval foramen hernias in 7 dogs diagnosed by computed tomography (CT). On lateral radiographs, 6 of 7 dogs showed dome-shaped, broad-based, caudal mediastinal lesions. CT findings included caudal vena cava (CVC) compression (n=7), right lateral (n=6) or medial (n=1) liver lobe involvement, hepatic vein dilation (n=5) and biliary tract involvement (n=1) with partial (n=6) or entire (n=1) liver lobe hernias. A caval foramen hernia should be part of the differential diagnosis when the aforementioned imaging features are detected. CT is considered as a useful tool for diagnosis and evaluation in dogs with a caval foramen hernia.
